Principal Denitzio’s Message
I hope you’ve enjoyed a restful winter break and have managed to stay warm in these chilly days. I’m looking forward to welcoming our students back tomorrow.
I want to begin my message to you for this week with a shift that we are incorporating into our school community in the interest of supporting all students. To date, our widely accessible student bathrooms are sex segregated. Based on student, teacher, and family feedback, Department of Education guidance and the belief in doing what is best for all students, the appropriate next step for our community is to provide a gender neutral bathroom.
Elementary schools across the Commonwealth, including the Baker, Driscoll, Heath, Lower Devotion, Pierce, and Runkle schools in Brookline have gender-neutral student bathrooms available. Gender-neutral bathrooms have been in place at Brookline High School for many years as well.
After considering our existing infrastructure, we have converted the 1st floor girls bathroom near the auditorium to be our gender-neutral bathroom. Due to programming needs at Lincoln, this bathroom is already used by students and staff of both genders. Converting this to a gender-neutral bathroom brings us into alignment with other schools in the district and into compliance with state law.
The gender-neutral bathroom has two stalls, one of which is handicapped accessible. Our intention is for this to effectively become a single-stall bathroom through the installation of a mechanism on the outer door to indicate whether the bathroom is occupied or empty. The current signage that designates it as a “Girls Bathroom” has been removed and replaced with a sign that says, “Bathroom.” The boys bathroom next to it will remain as is, at this time.
For students who identify as female and are most comfortable in a sex-segregated bathroom, there is and will continue to be a girls bathroom on the second floor immediately above the gender-neutral bathroom. Additionally, there remains a girls bathroom across from the gym.
State law guides us to make this change and the belief that all students deserve to be cared for, included and safe guides us to make this change. Thank you for your continued collaboration and support.
I am including here the Massachusetts Department of Education’s guidance on supporting LGBTQ students in public schools. http://www.doe.mass.edu/sfs/lgbtq/GenderIdentity.html
As some of you may know, Ms. Abner is on a one-year leave for the 2017-18 school year. Emily May had been the substitute librarian since September. Emily did a fantastic job filling in for Ms. Abner while also continuing to work in Lincoln’s Extended Day program. Working the school day and after school was not sustainable through the remainder of the year, so Emily’s last day inthe library was Dec. 22.
To finish out the school year as our librarian, we’ve hired Margaret French. Margaret French has been a long-term substitute in the library at Runkle School this fall and her assignment there ended on Dec. 22. She is currently completing a master’s in Library Sciences at Simmons College. Her first day at Lincoln will be Tuesday, Jan. 2.
Cold Weather Recess Guidance
In light of the recent cold snap, I want to reiterate our guidance around outdoor recess. Believing in the importance of opportunities to play every day, we will continue to have recess throughout the winter. Please be sure to label hats, gloves/mittens, coats and scarves so that when they are misplaced we can get them back to their owner — and keep them out of the lost and found. As a rule of thumb, as long as it is over 20 degrees, we will have outdoor recess. When the temperature is flirting right around the 20 degree mark, we will use any wind/overcast conditions to make the call as to whether recess will be outside or indoors. Our goal will be to keep recess outdoors as much as possible throughout the winter.
Winter Chorus Concert Dates Set
I’m reposting here our Winter Chorus Concert dates. All concerts will be held in the Lincoln auditorium from 8:15-9 a.m. Our fifth grade chorus and our middle school chorus will kick-off our Winter Concert season on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018. The following week, second and third graders will perform on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Kindergarten and first grade students will perform on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
